HK Wentworth is using Honeywell’s Solstice Propellant to produce air dusters  that enable European customers to comply with F-Gas regulations

SHANGHAI, May 21, 2018 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that its Honeywell Solstice® Propellant (HFO-1234ze(E)) is being used in new air dusters manufactured in China by HK Wentworth Ltd., to meet growing demand in Europe for products that are more environmentally preferable. The new air dusters comply with the European Union’s F-gas regulations, which restrict technical aerosol products from having a global warming potential (GWP) of more than 150. The regulation went into effect January 1, 2018.

Based on next-generation hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) technology developed by Honeywell, Solstice Propellant is a nonflammable* aerosol propellant that has an ultra-low GWP of less than 1**. It is non-ozone-depleting and is exempted from volatile organic compound (VOC) classification***.

Headquartered in the United Kingdom, HK Wentworth Ltd. is one of the largest suppliers of air dusters globally via its two divisions, Electrolube and AF International. “The remarkable performance and environmental benefits of our new HFO-based air dusters is helping to drive a faster, smoother transition to lower-GWP technology in Europe and other markets,” said Ron Jakeman, Managing Director, HK Wentworth Group Ltd. “The enhanced supply network with our Chinese partner Zhejiang Shanglin Technology helps us realize our commitment to deliver a satisfying experience to our customers.”

Air dusters are used in a variety of applications to remove dust and debris from hard-to-reach places. They must be nonflammable to be used safely on electronic devices such as computers and paper shredders. Although one of the most widely-used propellants in the industry is nonflammable, it is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC-134a) that is being phased out due to its high GWP of 1300.

“Honeywell’s Solstice Propellant is globally recognized as the standard for environmental benefits, optimal performance, and continued compliance with environmental regulations around the world,” said Eric Yang, General Manager of Fluorine Products, Asia Pacific. “We are excited to collaborate with manufacturers like HK Wentworth to provide the aerosol industry with innovative, next-generation technology that helps them meet their environmental goals.”

Honeywell’s family of Solstice-branded products includes, stationary, commercial refrigeration and mobile refrigerants, liquid and gaseous blowing agentssolvents and propellants—all based on Honeywell’s HFO technology that helps customers lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing end-product performance.

** GWP values are as per IPCC AR5. GWP values of HFC-134a and HFC-125a as per IPCC AR4 are 1,430 and 124 respectively.
* Non-flammable per ASTM E681 and ISO 10156:2010 testing methods
*** VOC exempt per US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB)
